La cirugía de la columna es la corrección de las anomalías estructurales de la columna vertebral que originan dolor.

Está indicada en los casos en los que hay una compresión importante de la médula o las raíces nerviosas, y cuando esta se debe sin lugar a dudas a la anomalía estructural detectada.

Una de las lesiones tratadas por la cirugía de la columna es la hernia discal cervical. La cirugía cervical puede ser necesaria para reducir la presión en la médula espinal o en las raíces nerviosas, cuando el dolor es causado por un disco herniado o por un estrechamiento óseo del canal vertebral.

También puede ser necesaria la cirugía en los traumatismos para estabilizar la columna cervical y minimizar la posibilidad de parálisis, cuando una fractura o luxación ocasiona una inestabilidad vertebral. Asimismo, la cirugía cervical también se emplea para casos de enfermedades degenerativas.
